My 12th Birthday
By Lori
Last week, I turned 12. I had my party here at Camp Couture. It was on the twelfth, a Saturday.
I was looking forward to it so much, and, being the awesome person she is, Alex did not disappoint…
I look around anxiously. It’s one o’clock! People should be here! I pace around the room, checking to be sure everything is in place. It is. All the shirts are rolled up and in the bowl. The machines are sitting in a row. The place is clean – or as clean as it gets (sorry, Alex!). The candy snack table is stocked. Cool music is blaring.
“Hey, Lori! Neat place.” It’s Leona.
“Hey, Leona! Great to see you!” I say. “Come on back.”
After that, everyone else trickles in – Erika, Sydney, and Molly. Only Charlotte isn’t here, and she has a soccer game so she’ll come about halfway through.
We start the project. When we’re done, we’ll each have a dress made out of three different shirts. Then Dez comes in. She is going to be our makeup artist.
She says, “Who’s the birthday girl?”
“I am.” I say.
“Hello!” Dez says. “I’m Desiree! But you can call me Dez. Just let me set up and I’ll start on you girls. Do you want to go first?”
“Yeah!” I say, excited.
So she sets up her makeup and a chair, then calls me
over. I hop on the chair and she starts on me. When she’s done, I race to the mirror to look.
“WHOAH!” I say. My skin shines and my eyes pop and my lips are deep red and I look like a movie star. “Dez! You are amazing. I look SO BEAUTIFUL!”
I keep working on my dress while Dez does the others’ makeup.
“Lori!”
“OHMIGOD Charlotte! I haven’t seen you in a year! Ohmigod, ohmigod!”
“I know!”
“C’mon, Alex will get you started. I can’t believe it. I missed you so bad!”
Finally, with a little help from Alex, Andrea, and Natalie, we’ve all got our dresses done, and Dez has done all the makeup.
“Now for your hair.” Dez announces. So she starts on my hair. She puts two little French braids down the sides of my head, leaving the middle part of my hair free. Dez then takes all my hair and ties it into a messy knot on the side of my head, near my neck. It looks amazing, of course.
Dez does everyone else’s, then my family starts coming. As people are coming in, Natalie does glitter tattoos. I get gold hearts on my neck. When it’s done, I go and greet everyone. Nana, Papa, Daddy, Sheesh, Mom, John, Evie, and Sophie.
Then it’s time for the show. Throughout the party, Hiromi,
the photographer, has been taking pictures. Now it’s her time to shine. We pose for her, as she and Dez call out instructions. The parents watch and take their own pictures. Evie and Sophie come out too, and show off their glitter tattoos.
“Look! I have TEN tattoos.” Sophie shouts. She shows everyone. She has one on her forehead, three on her back, and three on each arm. Sophie is four.
Finally, it’s time to leave. Alex hands out goody bags. Inside are handmade bags and eye masks sewn by Alex for our sleepover that night.
We say our goodbyes and get in the car. We race into the dark night and I think, This is the best birthday party EVER!
That was the best party I have ever had or attended. Thank you, Alex! I love how much effort you put into the party. You made it turn out so awesome.
J’adore Camp Couture!
